George II Walnut Open Armchair

Description

A superb and large George II Walnut Open Armchair with a vase shaped central back splat flanked by unusual bold sweeping arms with scrolled details, drop in seat and raised on turned tapering legs terminating in pad feet and united by a turned, shaped stretcher. It is interesting to note the shoulders of this chair have been strengthened with brass inserts. This is an indication of both the size and weight of the patron for whom this outstanding example was made.

Note: The shape of the legs transitioning from cabriole to the turned tapered legs here presages the further development into the middle of the 18th. Century with square section chamfered legs as seen so often on Chippendale Period chairs.
