Antique Waltham silver full hunter pocket watch, c1880.

The watch has an 11 jewel stem-winding movement, P S Bartlett grade, which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it carries the serial number 1,453,772 which dates it back to around 1880.

The Bartlett grade was named after Patten Sargeant Bartlett who was one of the early employees of the Boston Watch Company which went on to become the Waltham Watch Company. He subsequently left Waltham to work for the National Watch Company at Elgin Illinois but eventually returned to Waltham to work as a salesman before opening his own wholesale business.

The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has a personal inscription, ‘from Richard Drayton, a present from his Father to Joseph Drayton’.

The watch is larger than the standard 50mm diameter pocket watch, this one measures 60mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. This heavy case is signed on the inside of the front cover with the A M Watch Company name together with the words Sterling Silver.

The front and back of the watch have handsome detailing which has rubbed a little over the years. There is a little unevenness to the front and back but nothing too serious considering the age of the piece.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
