Andrew Cox Antiques has dated this piece to the 1900s.
The lid is hinged and the sides of the body have a foliar repousse band of decoration. As a sign of superior quality, the inside of the base is fully gilded.

Desirable pieces like this were used to scent cupboards or chests of drawers and were filled with violets, rose or other fragrant petals. They were also component parts of large travelling toiletry sets and are not easily found. A good collector's piece, both decorative and practical. Dimensions below.
