Victorian Captain’s Desk Chair

19th century
Description

Victorian captain’s chair

This Victorian captain’s desk chair was made circa 1880.

The chairmaker selected fruitwood, which is rare to find on this type of chair.

It also has another rare feature of the bullseye central splat, with the turnings under the arms ending with a hand grip.

The seat is fruitwood with beech turnings under the arms that have good hand grips.

These chairs provide great social history as they originally were known as smokers bow chairs, where after hard days graft the owner would sit and relax to smoke a pipe to unwind.

They were durable and popular, often placed in Inns and tea rooms. At times you see them in the old newsreels of the Battle of Britain as RAF pilots waited to scramble.

As time has gone on, they have now become known as captain’s chairs.

It has the saddle seat, this makes the chair to sit on, very comfortable and so make great desk chairs.

61cms deep 24ins
