Rare Enormous Silver Plated Salver / Tray C.1900 - Lister Family Crest

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

In all the years I have been in this business, I have never seen a salver / tray of this size, it's the most impressive centrepiece by the creme de la creme of silversmith's, "Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co." of London.

Dating to the beginning of the twentieth century, the tray stands on four scroll legs and the centre is engraved with a very regal heraldic crest, I believe for the Lister family. Below the crest is the motto "Retinens vestigia famae" meaning: "Still treading the footsteps of an honourable ancestry".

The underside is signed by the famous silversmith at 112 Regent Street, London; also marked with a trade mark, Regent Plate.

A rare and impressive piece in excellent condition spanning 22 1/2" x 2 1/2".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A salver is a flat tray traditionally made from sterling silver or silver plate, designed for serving food, drinks, or presenting formal documents. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, pieces featuring molded piecrust borders and engraved heraldic crests were commonly commissioned for private estates.

Around 1900, silver-plated salvers were manufactured using electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or copper base metals coated with a layer of fine silver. Molded borders were cast and soldered to the primary sheet, followed by manual engraving of family crests.

Authentic turn-of-the-century silver plate typically features stamped makers marks, EPNS designations, or trade symbols on the reverse side. The engraving on genuine period pieces displays hand-cut depth and variation rather than modern mechanical or laser etching.

A silver salver can be placed on a sideboard top or console table to cluster decanters and glassware into an organised bar display. It may also be displayed vertically on a shelf or mantelpiece to highlight the engraved detail.

To preserve silver plate, clean the surface periodically using a soft cotton cloth and specialised silver polish formulated to remove tarnish. Avoid abrasive materials that can wear through the electroplated layer, and store the item away from excessive humidity to minimise oxidisation.
