Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1890s.
The interior of the box is gilded with a full hallmark to the base (also a partial hallmark to the lid) for London 1896 together with makers initials C.C for Colen Hewer of Cheshire. The underside is also blessed with a stamped retailer's mark for "Jays 142 & 144 Oxford St. W" (in London's fashionable West End).
A good heavy gauge and in excellent condition, measuring 1 3/4" wide x 2".
