Description

Extremely finely knotted, this beautiful 'chanteh' - vanity-bag - was made by Qashqa'i nomads in Fars province, south-west Persia during the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

This must have been a special little bag, possibly made as part of a young bride's dowry, and for containing her mirror, jewellery and coins.

The natural dye wool is doft and glossy and the vertical minor borders contain white cotton highlighting, which can also be seen on the very top main border. Note also, the remains of the brocaded slits at the top which would have originally had the lappits, now missing, threaded trough as a means of securing the opening.

Complete with plain-weave back in narrow horizontal bands of natural colour, through wear, the very top has been worn away but secured.

This is a rare and superb example of a very collectable chanteh rarely found these days.
