Antique English Matched Pair of Regency Mahogany Upholstered Chaise Longue (Circa 1825)

19th century
Description

This is a rare antique English matched pair of Regency chaise longues / day beds, constructed from solid mahogany, circa 1825 - 1830, which have been newly upholstered, in excellent condition. The pair of Regency chaise longues / days beds feature (when facing you) both right-hand deep buttoned upholstered arms, with a straight upholstered backrests. The arm and backrest are solid in joint. The chaise has been newly upholstered, to a professional standard, in top-quality top quality satin chenille aubergine / grey upholstery, finished with brass stud work. Further decorative pleated detail can be seen along the frieze. The stuff over seats have been newly sprung and are in excellent condition. The seats are firm but comfortable to sit on; you do not sink into the pair of Regency chaise longues / day beds. The underside of the pair of Regency chaise longues / day beds have been traditionally upholstered in hessian. The chaise stands on its original mahogany legs, with ring turned detail to the front legs and splayed sabre legs to the rear, sitting on the original brass castors, which are also in good condition.

The Regency chaise longues / day beds features a rich dark brown mahogany colour. It has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.

The Regency chaise longues / day beds would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the living room or bedroom. The item would certainly grace any home or office and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency chaises longues, originating between 1811 and 1830, draw inspiration from classical Greco-Roman daybeds. They typically feature clean architectural proportions, turned or sweeping sabre legs, solid mahogany frameworks, and asymmetrical or single-ended padded backrests.

Furniture from this period was primarily constructed using solid mahogany or rosewood frameworks. Internal upholstery utilised natural stuffing materials such as horsehair, jute webbing, and coil springs, completed with silk, satin, or wool damask fabrics and brass brass castors.

Authentic Regency seating displays hand-cut joinery, hand-turned or carved mahogany details, and period-correct brass cup castors with iron wheels. Look for evidence of traditional hand-stitched webbing and original frame construction behind modern upholstery.

A matched pair can be positioned symmetrically opposite each other in a large reception room or placed in a bay window alcove. They work effectively at the foot of a bed or as elegant low-profile seating that preserves open sightlines in open-plan living spaces.

Clean wood frames regularly using a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain. Keep upholstery out of direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading and dry clean delicate fabrics with professional specialists.
