A Good, Regency English Drop-dial Mahogany Fusee Wall Clock By James Tupman, London. Circa 1820.
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:M. C. Taylor
This is an attractive and original clock.
The 8 day duration fusee timepiece movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, shaped pillars and shouldered plates.
Behind a 12'' diameter, bowed painted iron dial with cream base paint, outer divided minute track, inner Roman hour numerals and the maker''s signature of ''JAMES TUPMAN'' (of) ''Great Russell Srt'' (Street) to the upper portion and ''BLOOMSBURY'' (A fashionable part of the West end of London) to the lower portion. The blued steel matching ''open moon'' hands are finely cut and the cast brass locking bezel has a bowed glass.
The fine mahogany case has a narrow moulded bezel surround and the short trunk has finely carved ''ears''. The backbox has a curved bottom with a curved and cockbeaded bottom door and the drop front is strung with boxwood and has a central brass star inset. There is also a side access door to the right.
The maker is recorded at 44 Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, London between 1816 and 1819; No.67 i...n 1820; No.31 in 1822-1842; No.31 in 1845 until 1856 as a watch & clock maker and jeweller. He was most likely the brother of George Tupman, watchmaker of Old Bond Street, with whom he worked closely. This is a good example of his work.
Dimensions: 16 3/4'' high x 14'' wide x 6 1/2'' deep including the glass high point.
Condition: The clock is in excellent condition throughout and very well restored. The movement is clean and working perfectly, keeping to time and the escapement is correctly set. The dial and hands are restored and also the case. The bezel lock is working and has as key.
Price: The price is for the clock in its present restored condition and fully guaranteed.
