Very Rare French Palais Royal Niello Silver Cased Scent Bottle, Circa 1870

Description

This exquisite and very unusual 19th Century French *niello silver scent bottle dates circa 1870. Of cylindrical form, it is profusely decorated with Gothic style foliate scrolls. The hinged lid with engraved silver borders. The neck with glass stopper. The bottle fitted in its original presentation case, with gilt lettering for "Rue Bonhomme, 61 Palais Royal" confirming its provenance.

* Niello is a black mixture of copper, silver and lead sulphides, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, usually silver.

Hallmarks:

Small French guarantee mark on the back of the hinge.

Dimensions:

Height: 6cm / 2.3 inches.

Diameter: 1.7cm / 0.5 inches.

Condition:

Very good

Niello decorations in very good condition, minor loss to the front.

Strong hinge.
