Antique Salt-bag, Qashqa'i Nomads, Fars Province, South-west Persia.

Description

Recently acquired in Iran, this magnificent salt-bag is complete with neck decorative tassels and braided hanging cord. Both the front and back faces of this 'namakdan' (salt-bag - where 'namak' is salt and 'dan' is bag) are woven in very fine complimentary weft-weave - the back of the bag, equally attractive as the front.

Salt-bags, as the name implies, were used specifically for containing lumps of rock-salt which was given to the animals during long migrations to help in the dehydration process. Often pistachio nuts and almonds were also kept in the namakdan.

This superb namakdan was made by Qashqa'i nomads in Fars Province, south-west Persia around 1900 - 1920.
