Description

The peacock depicted prosperity and divine immortality and in this gorgeous little 'chanteh' (vanity-bag), we see the proud peacock dominating the natural un-dyed ivory ground. Below its spectacular feathers, can be seen either a baby peacock or a bird, and they are surrounded by beautiful flower-heads in a garden of Paradise.

Vanity-bags were made and used entirely by tribal women for keeping precious belongings in such as jewellery, coins and mirrors. They were highly-prized possessions and never intended for commercial sale. This beautiful chanteh is complete with its kilim back in glorious colours, lappits and ties at the top opening and was made by Qashqa'i nomads in Fars Province, south-west Persia circa 1900. Today, small chantehs like this are extremely rare within the nomadic tribes. This is a very collectible and magnificent little bag.
