Webberley Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
All raised on four ring turned legs co-joining the yew crinoline stretcher. The arms supported with plain swept uprights and centred with a further carved roundel splat.
Few early 19th century makers of Windsor chairs can claim more renown or a more prestigeous reputation than the Prior family. All three members of the family worked as chair makers but Robert is the only one recorded as using arm splats which mirrored the splats to the back. There are examples of this design which are stamped Robert Prior, Maker, Uxbridge.
The chair is solid and robust with no weak or loose joints. All original timbers, beautiful finely turned bulb stretchers and well shaped arms. All with superior colour and deep natural patina and in very good original condition throughout.
A beautiful and early yew wood example which can be attributed to one of the most distinguished makers of Windsor chairs.
