A mid 1800s lidded sycamore spice box retaining all of its seven spice pots inside the box. The lid with its turned knob has a transfer print of Crystal Palace in London, the site for the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. A very unusual subject matter for this type of spice box.
The lidded pots inside the box each have a named spice on the lid, Cloves, Allspice, Saffron, Pepper, Mace, Cinnamon Vanilla. Some of these are rarely seen on spice pots including saffron.
This box came from the Dr Reckless collection, the author of the recently published book on Nutmeg Graters, Pomanders & Spice Boxes.
It measures 17cm w x 7cm h excl the knoc.
