Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chenet is a decorative metal support, historically positioned in pairs inside or in front of a fireplace hearth to hold firewood above the hearth floor, improving air circulation and draft for the fire. In French Louis XV design, chenets were frequently combined with an adjustable crossbar to function as a decorative fender kerb surrounding the hearth opening.

Authentic Louis XV style chenets were primarily cast in bronze, which was subsequently chased and gilded using mercury gilding (ormolu). Contrast was often achieved by combining bright mercury-gilded bronze scrollwork with dark patinated bronze elements, such as cherub or putti figures.

Authentic 18th and 19th-century French gilt bronzes display high-quality hand chasing with fine surface detail, heavy cast weight, and distinct assembly marks on the reverse. Gilt surfaces show natural oxidisation and wear consistent with age, while the reverse side of castings remains unrefined, showing hand-tool marks and threaded steel tie-rods.

An antique gilt bronze fender or chenet can be placed within an inactive ornamental fireplace hearth or paired with a marble surround to create a focal point. Modern designers also utilise adjustable chenets as low sculptural elevated platforms on wide mantelpieces or credenzas.

Dust gilt bronze regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent dirt buildup in carved details. Avoid commercial metal polishes, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners, which strip historic gilding and patination; preserve original surfaces with a light application of microcrystalline wax.
