Antique Bread Sofreh, Afshar Nomads, Kerman Province, South Persia.

1900 - 1920
Description

Some of the most quirky bread sofrehs are those of the Afshar nomads in Kerman Province, southern Persia. I just love them, not only for their spontaneous symbolic patterns but as great examples of woven wall art.

Bread sofrehs were made specifically to knead the dough on before baking the bread - 'lavash' in Persian. They were utilitarian and never intended for commercial sale. Thus the weaver was free to express her own thoughts when weaving these sofrehs. My own thoughts on the expression here is that the zig-zags symbolised flowing water as what was important to these nomads, apart from salt, was bread and water.

This stunning sofreh, recently acquired in Iran, was made in the 1920s and is in very good condition.

Size: 1.04m x 1.02m (3' 5" x 3' 4").

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
