Pair of Victorian Prince of Wales Feathers Silver Plate Letter Openers C1880

19th century
Description

A pair of mid Victorian silver plate letter openers with Prince of Wales feathers finials c1880. Unusual to find a true pair, these silver plate letter openers bear a stamp for silver plated ware and the makers mark for Birmingham maker, John YATES & Sons. This maker was active between 1800 and 1900, hence the date to 1880 though they could have been made a little earlier. The finials are modelled with three plumes above a coronet, leading to plain shafts with pointed ends. One is slightly longer than the other and slightly curved at the tip, possibly due to more frequent use. They have a good weight and are tactile, and the condition is good for their age. Very pleasing and still good for the job!
