Description

A mid 19thC landscape oil on canvas of Cropthorne Hill, Gloucestershire signed R HAYES. The rural village scene depicts a horse drawn cart, driver and other figures passing through a picturesque village with beamed houses and trees, against a backdrop of a high and distant hillside. The condition, colour and detail are excellent. The painting is framed behind glass within its original water gilded frame with similar gilded slip. The reverse of the canvas is stamped with a Windsor & Newton mark and is inscribed with the title Cropthorne Hill, Gloucestershire. Works signed R HAYES have appeared at auction over the years but exact dates of the artist’s lifetime are not available. The painting can be dated from its style of painting, subject and the canvas and frame to c1860-1880, the mid Victorian era. . In excellent condition.

Note some reflections of my room/ceiling appear due to the glazing.
