Rare Japanese Edo (early To Mid-19thc) Boxwood Netsuke Of General Gentoku

Superb Japanese Edo (early to mid-19thC) boxwood netsuke of General Gentoku. The armour-clad warrior is depicted riding his horse, Tokiro, his head turned to the left and with a ferocious expression. Raised on a flat ova base with a central himotohi hole. Unsigned. Measures 4.6 x 4.7 x 2cm.
 
Gentoku was a Chinese Emperor, and one of the Three Heroes of the Han Dynasty (together with Kan’u and Chohi). He is often depicted riding his horse (across a river) as he escapes from a castle besieged by his brother-in-law.
 
Lovely condition and patina.
