Antique Chanteh (Vanity-bag), Shahsevan Nomads, Moghan Region, Azerbaijan.

1900 - 1920
Description

Vanity-bags or 'chanteh' in Persian, were made by nomadic women for their own use for containing coins, jewellery and mirrors, were highly prized possessions and were never for commercial sale. Today, they are scarce as this ancient art died out during the early 20th century.

Just occasionally, a little gem rears its head, often from Iranian sources who manage to acquire chantehs privately or still within the tribe itself. This charming tiny chanteh was woven by Shahsevan nomads in the Moghan region of Azerbaijan, probably around 1900. It is a complete, original little bag woven in soumak technique on the face and in plain-weave technique on the back. The Shahsevan woman has reinforced the opening part of the bag with blue cotton to give protection during use. A great little collectable chanteh.

Size: 20cm x 17cm (8" x 7").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
