Antique Baluch Tribal Rug, Ferdows Region, South-east Persia.

Description

The indigo-blue ground contains a myriad of 'birds-heads' symbols with the very red central one having the only highlighting of magenta silk in the rug itself. I would guess, therefore, that the rug was made for someone of importance within the tribe.

Surrounding the blue field is a beautiful madder-red border containing a continuous vine pattern and symbolising the eternal cycle of life. Difficult to make out without handling the rug, are the yellow wool highlights within the vine leaves - stunning!

The rug, which was made by Baluch tribes in the region of Ferdows in south-east Persia circa 1880, is in excellent condition and retains its flat-woven skirts at each end.

Size: 1.80m x 1.04m (5' 11" x 3' 5").
