We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian canine art emerged during the 19th century as pet keeping and field sports gained popularity in Britain. Artists focussed on precise anatomical realism, depicting working terriers, hounds, and companion dogs in naturalistic settings such as barns, stables, and rural landscapes.

Paintings from this era were rendered using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, as well as wooden panels. Frames were typically crafted from timber with moulded gesso decorative elements and finished in gold leaf.

Authentic pieces display natural craquelure across the paint surface, historic oxidation on the back of the canvas, and period-correct construction in the timber stretcher bars. Original gilded gesso frames often show subtle wear to the gold leaf along high points.

Ornate gilt-framed paintings pair well with dark paint schemes in a library or dining area, or hung above a period fireplace mantel. They can also create visual contrast when integrated into a modern gallery wall alongside contemporary line drawings.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Light surface dusting should be carried out using a dry soft brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
