George BATES: an attractive late 19th century OIL PAINTING on canvas of a woodcutter, his axe propped against a large branch with a lake behind his cottage and mountains in the background. Signed G. Bates and dated 1879 (lower left corner). 18.5 x 26.5 ins (47 x 67.5cms) including the ornate gilded frame.

* George Bates, born in England 1851 and died in 1911. He was actively painting during the 1873-1893 period, specialising in rural landscapes and woodland scenes.
