Description

A beautifully painted Regency miniature of a gentleman with the initials 'WW'. It has an oval gilt frame with a hanging loop. The gentleman wears a white stock with a gold stick pin and a cream and yellow striped silk waistcoat. Over this he wears and dark blue velvet brass buttoned coat. On the reverse there is a lock of his hair embellished with gold thread and his initials in seed pearls - hair does not decay. This was a way to immortalise the loved one. The miniature is unsigned but attributed to John Thomas Barber Beaumont F.S.A., F.G.S (1774 - 1841). Beaumont took up miniature painting in 1745. In 1791aged 17 Beaumont entered the Royal Academy School under the name J. Barber. He won awards from the Society of Arts in 1791, 1793, 1794 and 1795, and three medals at the RA School. Beaumont exhibited at the RA, 1794-1806 and obtained very distinguished clients including the Royal family. Later he was founder of the Beaumont Institution, Beaumont Square, which was named after him. He died in 1841 and was buried in Stepney. Miniatures by him are in the V & A Museum.
