A marvellous pair of comic engravings by George Cruikshank likening the tribulations of married life to a game of chess.
In the first engraving ‘Check Mate’ the master of the house is caught in mid seduction of the poor distressed chambermaid.
His wife flings open the study door with a look of angry surprise on her face as she witness her husband man-handling the female staff.
In the companion print ‘Stale Mate’, the chastened husband and angry wife sit back to back in a well appointed breakfast parlour ignoring each other. She deep in thought petting her cat while he scowls and studies his newspaper
Etched by George Cruikshank (1792-1878) and published in Thomas McLean’s ‘Cruikshankiana’ in London in 1835.

Clear and detailed impression of these plates, with good vibrant hand colouring
within a pair of fine period Hogarth frames with gilt slips.
There maybe some reflections in the glass these are not faults.
