Carboys and demijohns, traditionally known in France as dame-jeannes, are large bulbous glass vessels with narrow necks used historically for fermenting, storing, and transporting liquids such as wine, cider, and oil.

Antique demijohns were traditionally hand-blown or mould-blown using molten glass, resulting in subtle surface variations, internal air bubbles, pontil marks, and uneven lip rims.

Authentic period demijohns often feature hand-finished lips, air inclusions or seed bubbles within the glass walls, visible seam lines from early two-part moulds, or rough pontil scars on the base.
