Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chest on stand, also known as a highboy or tallboy, is a two-part piece of case furniture originating in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The design comprises an upper chest of drawers mounted onto a lower frame or stand raised on cabriole or turned legs.

Pieces from this era frequently feature walnut veneers, including figured or feather-banded cuts, laid over pine or oak carcasses. Handles and escutcheons were cast in brass, while legs were shaped into cabriole forms terminating in pad feet.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joints, oak drawer linings with grain running front-to-back, and natural age shrinkage to the timber. The top section and lower stand should show matching timber figure and construction to ensure they originated together.

A chest on stand serves as a structural focal point in a hallway, dining space, or bedroom. Positioning dark walnut timber against neutral walls creates visual contrast while preserving historical architectural proportions.

Maintain the timber finish by applying a thin layer of natural beeswax along the wood grain once or twice a year, avoiding aerosol polishes. Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement and veneer lifting.
