Aramis Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
A full length portrait of Nelson is held in the Royal Collection and this engraving appears to be based on the upper body, and dashing looks, of Nelson in that painting. Hoppner was a renowned colourist and this is reflected in the rich deep colours in this engraving. The printed names of both artist and engraver appear at bottom left and right of the image. I have framed the engraving in a decorative antique frame, made of oak and bois durci, a hard plaster like material. The frame dates to mid 19th, and has a silver gilt slip within. The engraving is behind glass. Both engraving and frame are lovely quality and excellent condition.
