Description

A late 19thc French silver plate on good quality brass crucifix dating to c1880. This is a finely modelled and cast crucifix. The figure of Christ is expressive and finely detailed. The crucifix stands on a decorative base with an acanthus leaf design all round and separate elements in brass including a sculpted image of a lamb. Behind the cross itself is a large circle of sun rays in brass. The extremities of the cross are decorated with shell shapes. Christ’s figure is affixed to the cross with small screws (see photo of the back). The hands of Christ, though showing the nails through his palms, are not fixed to the cross. The two tone effect of the metals, silver plate and pale colour brass, add depth an expression to this lovely French piece.
