A Superb Howard and Sons Victorian Rosewood Sideboard

19th century
Description

A top notch, rare & unique piece of British craftsmanship! Need we say more? ‘Howard and Sons, Berners Street, London’. A superb, very usable Victorian hardwood sideboard of large proportions with the full makers stamp in the drawer & intact original paper label to the rear. This piece of furniture when bought new would have represented a substantial investment by its first owner, who was obviously a very, very wealthy individual, possibly titled. The cabinet is formed of two sections, the top has moulded and ribbed cornice over four small, beautifully bevelled glazed doors and four recesses and is fitted with pillared side supports. The base section has three frieze drawers with superb, window catch style brass handles, bevelled glazed centre doors and two further side doors, & is supported on bun feet. This cabinet represents the best of Victorian manufacturing that is often copied, but never equalled in quality or detail & could genuinely be described as being in near perfect, original, unmolested condition. This piece, if made today (even if it was physically possible for it to be made today), would cost tens & tens of thousands of our fine British pounds to produce. The price today is £10,000 a substantial sum of money, but actually a fraction of its true value.

Working height 90CM.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian rosewood sideboards typically feature rich dark timbers, pronounced grain patterns, multi-tiered shelving, carved details, and integrated mirror backings designed to reflect light across dining spaces.

Nineteenth-century high-grade furniture relied on hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid timber frames, veneered rosewood panels, and precisely fitted mortise and tenon joinery built to endure extended use.

Authentic pieces exhibit rich reddish-brown wood tones with dark streaks, solid brass hardware, period-correct construction techniques such as uneven hand-cut dovetails, and occasional maker stamps or paper labels.

Anchor a modern dining room or expansive hallway by pairing a substantial wooden sideboard with contemporary art, simple ceramic vessels, and neutral wall tones to offset the heavy timber weight.

Preserve the natural timber surface by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish annually, whilst keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
