Description

An Art Deco style silver mounted scent bottle with enamelled lid with clear hallmarks for London 1945 and makers mark for renowned jeweller MAPPIN & WEBB. The octagonal silver lid is inset with bright green guilloche enamel with a radiating pattern from a central lower upturned V. This gives the effect of alternating rays of light spreading over the lid. The lid fits snugly. The stopper is present. The lid interior and silver collar are gilded. The collar is also hallmarked. The lead crystal bottle is cut with V shaped arches over a small hobnail cut inverted V shape, with an alternating pattern between the arches. representing the tall leaves and head of a flower. The base is star cut. A fine quality piece by a renowned silversmith, in excellent condition. It picks up on the Art Deco style in vogue before WWII but is made in the year of peace after WWII. I cannot help thinking that the use of a V throughout the design is a deliberate reference to the outcome of that event. Possible it was made as a celebration or victory piece.
