Description
An extremely good quality English George III figured mahogany bow fronted chest of drawers made by the renowned furniture makers Gillows. The chest has four graduating drawers which are finished with cockbeaded moulding and all retain their original fine brass gilt octagonal shaped handles with pull out brushing slide over the top drawer standing on its original splayed bracket feet. All the drawers are oak lined and retain their original working locks which come with a key. The top drawer is stamped with the makers name:- Gillows Lancaster Gillows of Lancaster was founded in 1730 by Robert Gillow who was a cabinet maker and overseas merchant. He had direct access to imported timber from the West Indies and created the finest quality furniture. In 1757 Robert went in to partnership with his son Richard who was an architect. In 1768 Robert retired and his son Robert II joined the family business opening a shop in Oxford Street London. Throughout the Victorian era Gillows of Lancaster and London had a renowned reputation for their quality of work and helped furnish many aristocratic houses.
