A good Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Brass ''Bottle'' Spit Jack, bearing the Maker''s Stamp of John Linwood of Birmingham, an attractive and decorative accessory for the country cottage inglenook. Once commonly encountered domestic items, these are now difficult to find in good, clean condition in today''s marketplace. This one in less than perfect condition, but still very authentic is here offered complete with it''s wrought iron hanging ring together with four hooks. The base plate stamped JOHN LINWOOD WARRANTED ~ John Linwood of 57, St. Paul''s Square, Birmingham, whose device of a tree was registered with the Sheffield Assay Office in 1807, for which see, JOHN LINWOOD. Further datails of the Linwood family of Birmingham metalworkers, including John, may be found in Wrightson''s Triennial Directory for 1818, for which refer to LINWOOD.
Caveat ~ Offered here purely as a decorative item, we regret that we are unable to offer any guarantee that the piece is fit for it''s original purpose since the internal springs of these spit-jacks are often either worn or broken and thus require to be repaired / replaced before the item will function as originally intended.
