ANTIQUE #SA903357

A Fine Scottish George III Mahogany 'fiddle-back' Side Chair Attributed To William Hamilton C.1770

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Jeckyll & Co

The back has a lovely sinuous line enclosing three pierced rails above a concave drop-in seat (for re-upholstery).

The chair is in excellent condition made using high quality timber and is structurally sound. There is a tiny patch on one upright, quite possibly contemporary with its making and beautifully finished. The chair seat frame is later, but traditionally made.

The chair bears many obvious and more subtle similarities to chairs made by Hamilton. It is useful to compare it to the ''fiddle-back'' chair also listed here, and identical to a set provided by Hamilton and in the collection of Trinity House. This chair has a lighter overall look and stands a little taller than the Trinity House model, its organic lines and movement in the spirit of the famous Cockpen chairs which were a speciality of the William Hamilton''s firm.
