We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ormolu, derived from the French or moulu meaning ground gold, became prominent in eighteenth-century France under Louis XV. Artisans used mercury gilding to adhere gold to cast bronze, creating decorative sconces featuring sweeping curves, foliage, and asymmetrical Rococo motifs.

Traditionally, gilt wall lights were cast in bronze or brass using the lost-wax process before receiving a mercury-gilded layer. Later nineteenth-century examples often utilised electroplating or gilt lacquered finishes over cast brass components.

Authentic period examples feature detailed hand-chasing, heavy casting weight, and signs of historical assembly such as square nuts, hand-cut threads, or remnants of original candle fitments. Oxidisation, minor rubbing on raised edges, and irregular casting marks on unseen reverse sides also indicate period manufacture.

Gilt wall lights are frequently installed in pairs to frame central architectural features such as mantelpieces, artwork, or large overmantel mirrors. They provide warm, indirect ambient lighting and introduce historical texture to contemporary or transitional schemes.

Dust gilt fixtures regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a soft bristle brush. Avoid using commercial metal polishes, abrasive pads, or water, as these will strip the delicate gilding layer and expose the underlying base metal.
