Late 18thc Stipple Engraving Evening C1790

18th century
Description

A delightful late 18thc hand coloured stipple engraving dating to c1790. The image is well known and was engraved and printed by Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815) after William Hamilton (1751-1801), and is known as Evening. It depicts a charming pastoral scene of a young couple courting in the early evening, with a shepherd boy passing by with sheep, and young girl looking enviably at the couple. The frames are black lacquered and gilt, and the image sits behind gilt painted glass known as verre eglomise. The back has not been opened so it’s not been possible to check if the usual attributions are inscribed on the edge of the engraving. In lovely original condition.
