19th century
Description

A Stunning Regency Kingwood Work Sewing Table.

A truly stunning table.

We bring to you this outstanding very rare Kingwood sewing table believed to be made around C1810 - 1820. This stunning table is in a lovely original condition which we have just enhanced by sympathetically restoring and waxing this table in our workshop, whilst preserving the lovely lightly faded original colour with lots of patina and charm.

This table is of the finest quality, featuring the very rare Kingwood in solid form with a simple moulded frieze, incorporating a locked drawer (with key) and an underslung green satin pleated material compartment for cotton or wool. The top stands on 2 shaped Lyre ends braced by a simple turned stretcher rail culminating to 4 sabre legs incorporating the finest quality paw shaped polished brass castors.

This table has been sympathetically restored in our workshop, cleaned and carefully waxed.

There is no movement or play in any of the joints. The top is flat with no bowing or twisting and the table is ready for its new home.

Please note this item is in beautiful condition for its age as shown in the photographs below however being an antique item it does have the odd minor blemish and historic repair here and there. However, we feel that these points are which adds charm and character to a piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency sewing table, or work table, is a compact piece of occasional furniture popularised during the early 19th century. Designed primarily for storing needlework and crafts, these tables typically feature shallow drawers and a suspended fabric basket underneath.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period frequently utilised rich exotic veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, and mahogany. These pieces often incorporate brass castors, turned stretchers, and silk or velvet fabric work boxes.

Authentic pieces from around 1820 exhibit neoclassical motifs such as lyre-form supports, brass paw feet, and precise hand-cut dovetail drawer joints. Original lock plates and natural age-related patina on timber and brass fittings also signal authenticity.

These versatile small-scale tables function effectively as lamp tables, bedside tables, or accent pieces in a living room or hallway. Placing a contemporary lamp or decorative dish on top creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to maintain the grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity to prevent timber movement and fabric deterioration.
