Description
A rare and important 18th Century Japanese Export Nagasaki lacquer chest. Beautifully decorated with fine lacquer work and gilt metal. Inlaid with mother of Pearl. We believe this bombe chest was made under Dutch instruction and was shipped to Japan for decoration. The marble we feel was changed in the early 19th Century probably to fit in with the colour scheme. A wonderfully shaped chest with two hinged doors with bronze/ormolu mounts on the edges, depicting scenes of pagodas, willow trees, bridges and flowering branches of cherry blossom. The doors open to reveal one interior shelf. Mounted on large bracket shaped feet with applied acanthus leaf mounts and the front apron holds a central, ornate brass decoration. Japanese lacquer, an already highly-prized commodity in the first half of the 17th century, became even more of a matériau de luxe when Japan’s relations with the rest of the word were severed in 1639, the country preserving only very limited trade relations with China and the Netherlands through the port of Nagasaki. Due to such restrictions, lacquer became almost exclusive to the trade of the marchands-merciers who paid dearly for such lacquer panels and which they in turn used to adorn the most precious objets d’art. Such objets en lacquer were very much favoured by the European noble families. Internal Ref: 2488
