A Rare 19th Century Coromandel-wood Sewing Box with Ten Reels

Description

A superb and quite rare coromandel-wood SEWING BOX with TEN identically sized Mother-of-Pearl (MOP) reels.

The case is of finest coromandel-wood with inlaid mother-of-pearl decoration to both the blank 'lion' shield-shaped cartouche on the lid and also to the front face escutcheon. There is gilded decoration to the external borders of both the lid and front face. With TWO keys and working lock.

There is a red velvet framed mirror inside the lid which, when released, reveals a hinged letter pocket.

Internally it has beautifully engraved brass hinges and lock plates, fitted sections including six blood-red lidded velvet compartments. Each embossed with gilded lines and corner rosettes plus foliage on the mirror frame. Unusually there are ten MOP reels (4, 6, 7 and 8 are more usual) the lidded compartments house needles, pins, tools etc (see below). The tools are complete and undamaged. The top tray lifts out to reveal further storage space underneath for silks etc.

Contents include various sewing related tools including  Scissors; MOP penknife; MOP reels; MOP waxer and MOP tape measure; MOP handled threader; MOP handled cork-screw; MOP handled spike; a delightful small double-sided sampler; yellow metal pin cushion in the form of a book, spare needles etc.
