Fabulous Cromwellian Oak Centre Table C. 1650

17th century
Description

A very handsome mid 17th century oak centre table with gun barrel turned legs and original substantial block and turned reel stretchers. The table with a fabulous colour and deep rich patination.

.

The pair of freezer drawers with carved and moulded inset borders with brass drop handles which are early replacements and correct for the period. The sides and back frieze panels, each with matching carved and moulded borders, allow the table to be used either as a side table or to be placed in the centre of the room as it is finished on all sides with the decorative stretches on all four sides also.

.

Such fine design details were very expensive and this table would have cost a small fortune when made. It would have been displayed in the most prominent room for visitors in the house and given a high profile to demonstrate the owners wealth.

.

Heavy and robust, the table is beautifully proportioned with an oversailing twin boarded top (original also) with a gently curved border, again on all sides.

.

Some minor knocks and small marks consistent with careful use although oak of this age becomes hardened like iron and the table is in superb condition for its age. The drawers open smoothly and close properly and are very solid and usable with some professionally replaced side oak lining boards.

.

A superb quality table dating from c. 1650 when Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector and Head of State for the commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. The table is of Puritan form and reflects the values of the period. It has gravitas combined with considerable charm.

.

A very rare survivor and a really beautiful and usable piece of early oak.

.

.

Dimensions are:

.

28 inches wide, 25 inches deep and 27 inches high.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
