Staffordshire Pottery Flatback Figure of Highwayman Tom King on Horseback - 1870'S.

Description

A Staffordshire flat back mantle figure of the notorious 18th century highwayman and associate of Dick Turpin, Tom King - also known as 'The Gentleman Highwayman' here he can be found dressed like a dandy in a striking cobalt blue jacket and yellow britches on his white horse, pistol in hand ready to relieve another traveller of their trinkets!

The figure dates to around 1870 and is bright and attractive with the soft gilding of the era, but he does also show the signs of his considerable age with some crazing, a firing crack to the reverse and some paint losses - I've included a wealth of images so that you can study him in detail.

Tom King stands 23cm high, 29cm across and 6cm deep - please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information or photographs.

Staffordshire flatback figures are press-moulded earthenware ornaments created in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the Victorian era. They were designed with flat, unpainted backs to sit flush against chimney mantels and sideboards.

These figures were cast in two-part press moulds using earthenware clay, fired once to a biscuit state, dipped in a clear lead glaze, and fired again. Details were then applied by hand using overglaze enamel pigments and gilding.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally feature a small release hole in the base or back, age-appropriate glaze crazing, light weight relative to modern reproductions, and a flat reverse side with little to no painted detail.

Position the figure on a fireplace mantelpiece, open bookshelf, or console table alongside curated hardback books and contemporary artwork to create visual texture and historical contrast.
