This is a beautiful timepiece by an eminent maker who also supplied movements to famous clockmakers.
The substantial, eight day duration, chain fusee , 5 pillar movement with Anchor Recoil escapement. Also having arched plates, transit pendulum lock and large pendulum with a shaped rod. The inside of the frontplate is stamped with the hidden makers name ''GAMAGE''.
Behind a 6'' diameter, slightly bowed, white enamel dial with black Roman hour numerals and outer minute track with bold markings to the hours and quarters. The centre and winding holes having protective grommets and the blackened steel hands are ''spade'' style. The cast brass locking bezel has bowed, snapped-in glass.
Contained in a brass-bound rosewood veneered, arched case. The front edge is trimmed with a canted brass protective strip and the section below the dial has a recessed panel that follows the contours of the case and dial. This is framed with brass quadrant trim. The short all-round plinth is strapped
... with brass on three sides, has a small Cavetto moulded top and sits upon four brass bun-and-plate feet. The case sides have brass wreath and ring carrying handles that sit over arched top apertures that have cloth backed brass fishscale frets. The back has an arched glazed and locking door.
Thomas Gammage was in the Clockmaker''s Company from 1814 until 1840. He was a prolific and good maker that for a period, working for James McCabe. He is known to have supplied movements to other eminent clockmakers such as Benjamin Vulliamy. Probably the most important point about this clock is the fine condition and originality, it is practically mint. It also has features such as the simple lines and brass ''protection'' that are found on ''Campaign'' clocks.
The clock movement is clean, working exceptionally well and keeping accurate time but has not been overhauled by us. The dial is in perfect condition as is the case and locks. The brasswork has been cleaned and lacquered and the case has been cleaned and re-polished in the traditional way. This clock looks stunning.
