Exquisite Antique English Papier Mache Card Case C.1840

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

Although not signed, I feel sure this wonderful card case must have been made by the highly sought-after Jennens & Bettridge, the finest makes of Paper Mache during this period.

Beautifully decorated with hand painting, Mother of Pearl inlay and gilding. Each side features a Peacock, static one side with the feather eyes being inlaid with tiny pieces of iridescent Mother of Pearl. The Peacock on the other side is painted in-flight.

There is a tiny silver mount to the lid with an old engraved decorative monogram. The hinge is unusual being inset to the papier mache on the outside. The hinge is stable and in excellent shape and the interior edges are trimmed in Ivory.

An excellent example is superb condition, measuring 4 1/4" x 2 3/4".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
