Description
This clock is at our Southampton branch so please call David on 07830 293078 for further information and to make a purchase. This is a fine example of the clock makers craft, the movement is delicate and beautifully made. The case and dial are very typical of the Gothic revival at the end of the 19th century - this is a large and imposing clock. Impressive Large Triple Fusee 1/4 Strike On 8 Bells, and Hour Strike on a Gong, London Bracket Clock c.1860 by 'James Bishopp of 20 Bunhill Row London' This clock is a superb quality large and impressive Library or Boardroom bracket clock made in London c.1860. A heavily 'in house built' by Bishopp (i.e. not a Thwaites movement) triple chain 1/4 chiming on eight bell fusee movement is made of heavy gauge brass plates and has seven pillars supporting the plates. This is the heart of this clock and has very well cut wheels & pinions and everything is beautifully finished with burnished spokes and screwed collets. The eight bells have a super tone and really melodic when the quarters are struck, the hour is followed on a heavy blued steel gong with a very noticeable sound that cannot be missed. James Bishopp with the address is on the back plate behind the pendulum holdfast. Working well after having been serviced and regulated with, as one would expect, excellent time keeping properties. The original dial retains its silvering as applied when new and is in very good order, the engraving is good and so is the wax infill of the numerals and dial signature ' James Bishopp, 20 Bunhill Row. London'. There is also rise & fall regulation above the Xll and strike/silent adjacent the number lll. Original hands mark the passing of the hours and minutes. Winding key provided. An oak case of solid construction and bookmatched quartered timber to the front showing and highlighting the medullary rays, so associated with Oak, houses the movement as described. and has been professionally restored and repolished to really make the clock as good as it does..........I think it looks better 'in the flesh' than in the photos being frank. Said case has ebonised mouldings (on Oak) as can be seen in the pictures and the contrast is stunning as the Oak is a lovely nut brown and with said black mouldings and highlights when in bright light it is knockout. Habotai silk backed ebonised sound frets to the side and a silk backed metal sound fret to the rear door allow the 1/4 chime and hour strike to be heard. It is a large clock standing 20 1/2" tall to the apex by 14 1/2" wide and 8 1/4" front to back and is, I would suggest, a statement piece. A little history about James Bishopp following research. The company started off in around 1845 as 'Marten & Bishopp' of 20 Bunhill Row London but by c.1855 it appears Marten had left the business as clocks & watches are found at this date signed just by James Bishopp. The clock listed here has a relatively low serial number so I would think a date of making would be between 1855 and 1860 as the numbering system, more than likely, carried on from when the company first started A rare opportunity to own an important clock. The clock has been recently serviced and is ready for a new home, and the full asking price includes hand blanketed delivery anywhere in England and Wales - please inquire for more information.
