N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
This stunning antique mantel clock has a mahogany “balloon” shaped case with a lovely rich colour. The case is rounded to the top and has an almost hour glass shape leading to the base. The base is then arched which is very unusual and has a fantastic moulding to the sides and front. Finally it is finished by four fantastic, shaped brass feet.
The top of the dial then has a fast and slow adjuster. The dial is then signed by the maker “BOLTON SMITH 26 DUKE STREET LONDON” who was “MEDALIST AND HONOURSMAN IN HOROLOGY” and received “HIGHEST AWARD AT THE GOVERNMENT TRIALS OF WATCHES, 1894-5-6”. Finally the dial is finished by two lovely shaped hands and a domed and bevelled glass set into a brass bezel.
The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It is ticking away as it should and comes complete with its winding key. It is a single chain fusee example of the upmost quality and is unusual in the fact that in runs off a balance wheel rather than a pendulum.
