Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British equestrian and sporting art developed prominently in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, focusing on field sports, thoroughbred horses, and country life. These works typically feature detailed anatomical depictions of animals alongside figures in traditional riding attire set against rural architecture or landscapes.

Traditional equestrian artworks were painted using oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas. The paintings were typically housed in ornate, carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf gilding or plaster mouldings.

Authentic period oil paintings usually display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas, and hand-cut wooden stretcher bars. Artists often signed their works in the lower corners using fine brushes, sometimes alongside dates or location marks.

An equestrian oil painting functions well as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a gallery wall. Pairing traditional framed artwork with modern minimalist furniture creates a balanced, transitional aesthetic.

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths or commercial cleaning chemicals which damage the varnish. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high-humidity areas to prevent canvas warping and pigment fading.
