Stunning Late 19thc Anglo Indian Ebony and Inlaid Workbox. Superb quality and highly decorative late 19th century profusely inlaid hardwood Anglo Indian workbox of delightful shape with scrolled handles and an inner tray lined in red velvet, possibly from the Hoshiarpur area in Punjab, this area being renowned for their superb and intricate inlay work. It was made in Monghry on the Ganges River An almost identical box was offered at Bonhams in 2007 https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/15335/lot/520/ For further examples of Monghyr woodwork, see Amin Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, pp. 235-37, nos. 77, 78, and 79 (courtesy of Bonhams) This box consists of a profusely florally inlaid top and body with a central panel inlaid with floral and foliate decoration.
