Description

Charming late 19th.c. French or quite possibly Belgian portrait of a racing pigeon dated 1898. Painted in oil on canvas in a slightly naive style and static profile pose typical of the genre. Against an attractive coastal or lakeside landscape with boats and trees and a village in the distance. Annotated with the name of the breeder Joseph Dejond and the bird’s competition record (with the year race took place, release location & finishing position) with dates from 1893 -97, culminating in the Concours National (National Competition). Signed by the artist Jules Cornel in the lower right hand corner and dated 1898, making this quite an early example of pigeon painting which is more common in the early 20th.c. Excellent condition, presented as found, unframed on the original wooden stretcher.
