Art Deco Silver & "Butterfly Wing" Small Glass Inkwell by Henry Matthews, Birmingham 1923

Description

This unusual and exquisite "butterfly wing" silver mounted glass inkwell is dated Birmingham 1923 and was made by the renowned Henry Matthews. The hinged silver lid with a glazed top encasing an iridescent butterfly wing decoration cabochon. Butterfly wing jewellery was popular in the Art Deco period and it involved using real butterfly wings (usually from the South American Morpho butterfly) to create rich blue accents. The circular glass body with a fully hallmarked silver collar. The back of the hinge with patent number.

Hallmarks:

HM for Henry Matthews.

Birmingham Assay Mark.

Lion Passant.

Date letter "y" for 1924

Condition:

Very good..

The butterfly wing inset is in very good condition.

The hinge is good.

Hallmarks are clear.

Glass base with no chips.

Dimensions:

Height: 4cm / 1.4 inches.

Diameter of base: 6.5cm / 2.5 inches.
