Complete and original from the three carved finials to the bracket feet.
The silvered brass dial is engraved in the West Country manner and is exceptionally fine. The signature “Jonas Pollard – Crediton” appears in a banner across the dial. The arch is engraved for the age of the moon and ‘High Tide at Plymouth’, the aspect of the moon is displayed between engraved globes with the signs of the Zodiac. The movement is fully overhauled, regulated and covered by a 12 month guarantee.
This extremely rare clock was made circa 1795. At around this time, Jonas would have been completing his apprenticeship to his father. The inclusion of a tidal and moonphase dial meant that this was either an important commission for wealthy customer or possibly Jonas’ ‘masterpiece’.
About The Maker
Jonas Pollard b. 1773 m. 1806 d. 1835 of Crediton (Devon) was the son of clockmaker John Pollard also of Crediton. In his Will he made provision for 13 children. An interesting notice appears in the Exeter Flying Post 16 December 1824 “inhabitants of West Town of Crediton are much indebted to the public spirit of Mr Jonas Pollard, Clockmaker and Ironmonger of that place – who has, at his own expense, fixed up a neat clock with the dial against the front of this house, facing the market place which is a great accommodation to the public”.
Several other members of the family are recorded working in Crediton, Exeter and Plymouth Dock (Devonport).
